What's Involved?
Each workshop is individually tailored to suit the needs of each particular group. We pride ourselves in the ability to deliver a fun, interactive and motivational workshop that is pitched directly at the correct level for each group.
The workshops usually begin with a warm up game or activity, which often involves body drumming, silly dancing and lots of laughter as we break the ice and encourage the children to feel relaxed and confident.
When sufficiently 'warmed up' we move onto the drums. Steve sometimes will do his hilarious 'Introduction to the Djembe' which involves a very friendly drum (Steve's drum is called Bob!) 'getting to know' the children (this part cannot be described and can only be witnessed!) - at this point the kids have definitely cottoned onto our style and know that they're in for a vey fun and lively time.
When on the drums, we start with rumbles and drum rolls in all sorts of styles. We have fast ones, slow ones, crescendo's dimminuendo's…you name it we can rumble it!
Often the children will be given the chance to conduct the group rumble which is a fantastic way to build confidence and nurtures a great team willingness to co-operate and make it work for each other.
After playing a few introductory drumming games, we move onto learning a little about the drums, the way they're played, their different names and their role in traditional African culture.
At this point the workshop usually goes in one of two directions:
A) the children are encouraged to make up their own rhythms, and we create a piece of music based on their original compositions and/ or:
B) we learn traditional African drumming patterns and put them together to make a dynamic and exciting finale to the session.
Whichever activities are chosen for the session, the result is always the same:
All singing, all dancing, happy children.... Energised, Motivated and Ready to take on the World!!!
